Day 1 2008 LCM Senior Champs report

A Great Start for RSA!

RSA kicked off the 2008 Long Course Senior Champs meet in Chapel Hill with victories in three of the four events contested tonight.

Sarah Henry, Hannah Caron, Henriette Stenkvist and Jessie Godlewski led us to a 1-2-3-8 finish in the women’s 800 free. Sarah’s swim was a LTB (lifetime best) by 14 seconds and a RSA 15-16 women and RSA open women’s team record. (8:52.71) Sarah’s 400 split of 4:22.82 was also a LTB and a RSA team record for 15-16 women. Henriette re-set her own 13-14 women’s RSA team record in the 800 (for the third time this summer) with a swim of 9:12.42. Jessie’s swim was a 10+ second drop from her previous best. Victoria Bell, Tessa Pena and Kristin Connors kept it rolling for the RSA with three more LTB’s in the 800.

Sarah’s 800 free also set a new meet record.

Phil Arve led the scoring for the RSA men with a LTB in the 800 to finish 12th. Matthew Newland also recorded a LTB in the 800.

RSA’s women’s 800 free relays were up next and the team of Hannah Caron, Jessie Godlewski, Sarah Henry and Henriette Stenkvist were victorious in a time of 8:33.52. The highlight of that relay was Sarah’s split of 2:02. The women’s B relay of Tessa Pena, Kristyn Repke, Claire Caron and Kristin Connors finished 10th, highlighted by Kristyn’s split of 2:11 (her individual LTB is 2:14).

The RSA women set a new meet record in the 800 free relay.

The RSA kept us in front with a victory in the 800 free relay out of lane 8. The team of Andy Lamb, Will Dove, Andrew Henry and Phil Arve shattered the RSA Open record in the event by 7 seconds to finish in 7:52.67. Andy’s leadoff leg was 1:58.5 – a LTB by over 3 seconds. Will’s split of 1:52.2 helped quite a bit as well. The RSA men outdid the women, as the B was 8th with a time of 8:15.79. Tucker Dupree, Wayne Erb, Michael Williams and Dylan Kab swam excellent races in the event.

Five more RSA records down on day 1 – a great start to the meet! RSA leads the meet after day one with 185 points – 5 over second-place MAC.

No relays tomorrow as we concentrate on individual races: 200 free, 100breaststroke, 100 fly, and 400IM.

Day 2 Preliminaries at 2008 LCM NCS Senior Champs

RSA got off to another good start this morning, with Sarah Henry making the A final in the 200 free and Kristyn Repke the C final. Claire Nobles, Kristin Connors and Georgia Van de Zande recorded LTB’s in the event. For the men’s 200 free, Andy Lamb qualified for the B final and Phil Arve for the C final (with a LTB) while Seth Connor, Matthew Newland, Wayne Erb and Dylan Kab all recorded LTB’s.

Next was the 100 breaststroke and RSA was buoyed by a LTB performance from Tessa Pena which earned her a swim in the C final tonight. Keary McClernan is the top qualifier going into finals (after a LTB in the morning) and Hannah Facchine is also in the A final. Becky Malone qualified in the B final as well. For the RSA men, Ryan Cox is the top qualifier going into tonight’s final and Bud McClernan is in the A final as well.

100 flys were next and Hannah Caron swam her way into the A final, while Becky Malone earned a B final swim and Claire Caron qualified in the C final. Claire Nobles and Emily Facchine recorded LTB’s in the event as well. The RSA men have three in the B final tonight: Phil Arve, Wayne Erb and Andy Lamb. Matthew Newland, Neville Cross, Wayne Erb and Dylan Kab all recorded LTB’s in the 100 fly.

The morning’s final event (which went into the afternoon) was the 400IM. Sarah Henry and Hannah Caron are in the A final tonight while Claire Caron is in the C final. Emily Facchine recorded a LTB in the 400IM in prelims as well. The RSA men were led by LTB’s from Matthew Newland and Phil Arve; Phil’s swim was good for 14th-place in the preliminaries and he will swim in the B final tonight.

Day 2 Finals Report 2008 LCM Senior Champs

It was a short program tonight with only 4 individual events contested, but RSA’s Senior Champs contingent continued to shine.

Sarah Henry started us off with a victory, meet record and RSA 15-16 women and RSA Women’s Open record of 2:03.16 in the 200 free. Andy Lamb then followed with a 9th-place consolation finals win out of lane 1 and a LTB of 1:57.82 in the men’s 200 free.

Keary McClernan added to the victory count with a win in the 100 breaststroke after besting Hannah Facchine’s meet record in the preliminaries. Hannah added an 8th place finish in the event. Becky Malone placed 10th while Claire Caron and Tessa Pena moved up in the C final. Tessa swam another LTB in the 100 breaststroke. Ryan Cox and Bud McClernan nearly tied in the men’s 100 breaststroke, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.

Hannah Caron placed second in the women’s 100 fly while her sister Claire finished in 11th place. For the men, Andy Lamb finished in 10th place with another LTB in the 100 fly of 58.39 while Wayne Erb finished in 14th place out of lane 1 with another LTB and a near-miss of the magical 1:00 barrier (1:00.05).

The final event of the evening witnessed Sarah Henry setting another meet record, and also a RSA 15-16 women’s record and women’s Open record and a North Carolina Swimming record in the 400 IM of 4:49.49. This was a 5.3 second drop from Olympic Trials for Sarah. Hannah Caron finished in third-place. Phil Arve swam to a 15th-place finish for the men – Phil showed a lot of toughness today with 6 total swims.

Tomorrow is a big day: 50 free, 400 free, 200 fly, 200 breast, 100 back and 400 free relay

Day 3 2008 LCM Senior Champs report

RSA finished the third day of the 2008 LCM Senior Champs in Chapel Hill in third place, just 24 points out of second-place.

The first event of the evening was the 200 fly and Sarah Henry (3rd), Hannah Caron (9th) and Claire Caron (14th) led the way in the scoring for RSA. Jessie Godlewski added a LTB in the bonus final as well. Phil Arve swam to a third-place finish in the men’s 200 fly and a LTB of 2:07.40 – a 3 second drop! Wayne Erb added a C-final swim in the 200 fly a 3-second drop from his previous best.

Next up was the 50 free and the RSA women were led by Hannah Caron (4th) and MJ Densmore (14th) while another 2 athletes (Claire Nobles and Kristyn Repke) swam in the bonus final. The RSA men were led by Will Dove (2nd) and Andy Lamb (4th) while Dylan Kab and Michael Williams earned bonus final swims as well.

Sarah Henry led the RSA assault on the 200 breaststroke with a meet-record 2:31.92 while Keary McClernan placed second. In addition, Hannah Caron finished 12th, Claire Caron 13th and Hannah Facchine finished 15th. Tessa Pena continued to drop time in the bonus final, down to 2:52 after coming into the meet with a 2:59 LTB and Becky Malone opted to go for a 100 breaststroke split in the bonus final and earned a LTB by nearly a second in the 100 breast of 1:16.88.

Torrey Bussey placed third in the 100 backstroke while MJ Densmore won the consolation final with a 9th-place swim. Andy Lamb finished 5th in the men’s 100 back.

The final individual event was the 400 freestyle, and Sarah Henry set a meet record, a RSA 15-16 women’s record and a RSA Open women’s record of 4:19.36 to win the event. Jessie Godlewski continued her trend of great evening swims with a 4-second drop in the 400 free bonus final.

400 free relays were bittersweet for RSA and the women’s contingent won the event only to be disqualified for an early take-off. The B relay of MJ Densmore, Claire Nobles, Lindsey Giglio, and Jessie Godlewski earned an 8th-place finish – great job for a 13-14 relay! The RSA men finished a close second to MAC with a great 3:32 400 free relay of Will Dove, Andy Lamb, Phil Arve and Michael Williams. The RSA B of Alan Cox, Ryan Cox, Dylan Kab and Andrew Henry finished 13th.

Day 4 report

RSA continued its fast swimming this morning with good 100 freestyles, 200 backstrokes, and 200 IMs. Sarah Henry swam a LTB in the preliminaries of the 100 free and is the top seed for finals while Hannah Caron is second seed. Phil Arve qualified into the B final while Michael Williams and Dylan Kab swam into the C final. MJ Densmore dropped 4+ seconds in the 200 back to swim into the A final with 2:27 while Claire Caron and Jessie Godlewski will swim in the B final tonight. The final event of the morning saw RSA earn 3 in the women’s A final for the 200IM and one in the A and two in the B for the men in the 200IM.

2008 LCM Senior Champs Final Report

RSA finished the 2008 LCM Senior Champs in 3rd-place with 871.5 points. Instrumental in our success this meet was the sheer number of different athletes who earned second swims and scored points. Usually at a Championship meet the stars score all the points. At this meet 24 different RSA athletes contributed to the point total – congrats to all!

RSA was off to a great 1-2 start in the women’s 100 free as Sarah Henry and Hannah Caron led the way. Sarah’s time of 57.40 was a RSA 15-16 record, a RSA open women’s record and a meet record. Claire Nobles moved up in the C final as well. Michael Williams and Dylan Kab finished 1-3 in the C final of the men’s 100 free.

Jessie Godlewski earned a hard-fought 4th-place finish in the women’s 1500 free. Jessie descended her 500’s (6:01-6:00-5:59) for a final time of 18:01.90 – a 17-second improvement. Emily Facchine also swam a LTB in the 1500. Matthew Newland was the lone male 1500 participant and he also earned a LTB in the event, finishing 20th.

MJ Densmore made her first senior A final in the women’s 200 backstroke, with a 3-second drop in prelims to go 2:27.38. MJ finished 8th in the event. Claire Caron and Jessie Godlewski finished 10th and 16th in the event as well.

The final individual event of the meet was the 200IM. Sarah Henry won the event in a new meet record time, while Hannah Caron finished 2nd and Claire Caron finished 7th. Phil Arve finished 7th for the men, while Andy Lamb added a 10th-place finish and Wayne Erb finished 13th.

The RSA women’s A 400 medley relay won the event in a new meet record (Torrey Bussey, Keary McClernan, Hannah Caron, Sarah Henry) while the B relay of MJ Densmore, Tessa Pena, Claire Caron and Claire Nobles finished 12th. The C relay of Jessie Godlewski, Lindsey Giglio, Maggie Holsinger and Kristin Connors finished 16th, but only 2 relays per team can score. The RSA men finished 2nd and 6th in the event, with the relay of Andy Lamb, Bud McClernan, Phil Arve and Michael Williams in second and the contingent of Wayne Erb, Ryan Cox, Will Dove and Dylan Kab finishing sixth.

Sarah Henry and Hannah Caron finished 1-2 in the women’s high point award.
