Minnow, Nova, Wahoo, & Dolphin Parent Meeting Set for THIS Thursday, Sept 18th
On September 18th we will be having our annual short course season parent meeting. During this meeting I will be explaining meet policies, talk about practice, volunteer opportunities, and much more. It is important and vital for parents to attend this meeting! The meeting will be held from 6:00-6:45 PM at Candler Swim Club. All parents please attend!

RSA DAY Is Approaching- THIS SATURDAY, September 20, 2003
The annual RSA Day is September 20th at Candler Swim Club. Please be sure to attend this event. This where you can buy all your RSA team gear. Team suits can be purchased, t-shirts, swim caps, fins and much more. You can come and purchase all of your apparel anytime between 9:00 AM-noon. Minnow, Nova, Wahoos, and Dolphins will practice from 9:00-10:00 AM at Candler. We will have a good time as the entire team will be practicing together and playing games.

Wayland and Mary DeJarnette are in charge of selling all RSA apparel, but they will need help selling on RSA Day. If there would be any parents interested in helping them out on RSA DAY it would be greatly appreciated. If there are parents that are interested please email Wayland DeJarnette at WDEJ@prodigy.net

What Minnow, Nova, Wahoo, & Dolphins Need to Buy at RSA Day
The main two items that all Minnows, Novas, Wahoos, and Dolphins will have to purchase will be a pair of swim fins and a fin bag. Fitting kits will be on hand to try them on. If your child intends on participating in swim meets this year then they will also need to purchase a team suit. All this can be bought on RSA Day. Swimmers in the Minnow, Nova, Wahoo, & Dolphin groups do not need their swim fins until after RSA Day

RSA TEAM T-SHIRTS
This years RSA Team T-shirts have been ordered, and can be picked up on RSA Day. If you have not turned in your registration form with payment then you will not receive your t-shirt until the payment, t-shirt size, and registration has been received. We have ordered the shirts of swimmers who have registered and paid. Those who have not will get their shirts in the next team order.

Chick-fil-a Calenders
Judy Glover will be on hand Thursday night to begin distributing the Chick-fil-a calendars.  We will need at least two parent representatives, per swim group, to manage/distribute calendars to their group.  If you would like to help with this fundraiser, please see Judy Thursday evening. Judy will discuss all the specifics at the meeting.  Basically they are $5.00 each and have $20 worth of coupons in each calendar.

What to Bring to Practice
  • Dry land clothes- this includes running shoes, t-shirt, & shorts
  • swim suit
  • goggles (do not forget these because I do not have extra for other borrow)
  • towel
  • swim caps (this is optional, although I do think that girls with long hair really need to wear one)

TECHNIQUE FOR THE WEEK
Outstanding job this first week of practice. I know at times the weather did not really cooperate, but I thought we still got a lot accomplished. This past week we had a real focus on freestyle. I tried to emphasize the importance of rolling your shoulders in this stroke. Not only does it allow you to go faster and make deeper pulls, but it also help you with your breathing. This is a very important skill to learn and practice. We also talked about another fundamental skill in swimming which is streamlining. All really good age group swimmers are able to streamlime very well. It is important to get in the habit of doing this every time you push off the wall or dive in the water. If you do it in practice the chances of you doing it in a meet are much better. Towards the end of the week the Dolphin group began learning how to do freestyle flip turns. This will continue this week as well. Wahoos will learn this new skill as well this week. This week will also move on to learning breaststroke. This can be a difficult stroke for some swimmers, and takes concentration and coordination. Please be sure to come to practice ready to listen carefully.

We will be starting each practice with about 15-20 minutes of dry land exercises. We are doing this for several different reasons.
  • These exercises are designed to help the kids get stronger, learn better coordination, and are directly related to the strokes and drills we will do in the water.
  • The exercises will help accelerate the heart rate, therefore getting the blood flowing and spreading more oxygen throughout the body.
  • Not only will they help make you a stronger swimmer, but we as coaches are looking to build the muscles around the joints to prevent injury in the future
  • Sometimes it is hard for younger kids to swim for an hour in the water, and this will be just a little change of pace.
  • THESE EXERCISES WILL BE FUN!!!

Excellent job this week RSA. Please remember the parent meeting in Thursday, Sept 18th, and RSA Day on Sept. 20th. These are two important days that all swimmers and parents should attend.
