A Record Breaking Frenzy by RSA At Sectionals by Dan Flack 2003-03-18 09:13:00 I think RSA had a pretty good meet folks, here are some of the facts: 7 Individual State Records Broken 2 Relay State Records Broken 8 Senior Individual Senior National Time Standards All 6 relays made Senior National time standards 4 New US Open Time Standards 48, Yes, 48 RSA Team Records Broken 4 New Meet Records 4 Individual Championships 1 Relay Championship 3rd Place Overall In Team Competition 2nd Place Overall In The Men’s Team Competition 17 year old Matt McGinnis put on a show that swimming fans and coaches will remember for some time. Matt won the 100 and 200 freestyle, the 200 back, the 200 IM, placed 2nd in the 50 free and 100 back, and placed third in the 400 IM. Matt’s 200 free and 400 IM were state records in both the 17-18 and Open categories. All of Matt’s swims except for the 50 free were Senior National qualifying times, and all his swims were team records. Matt’s time of 1:36.1 in the 200 free was the 5th fastest all time for boys 17-18 years old in the United States. Stephanie Glover was just on fire. Stephanie broke the State Record in the 100 butterfly for 15-18 girls with a new Senior National time. Stephanie also made Senior Nationals in the 100 backstroke, and qualified for the US Open in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 backstroke. Her 50 and 100 free were just off state record and Senior National times, and over Stephanie swam 10 RSA team record breaking swims over the course of the weekend. Katy Bland stepped it up with a very busy weekend. Katy swam a Senior National qualifying time in the 200 free, broke team records in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and 400 IM, and qualified in the top eight in the 100 free, 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 IM. 13 year old Julie Smith showed she can set up and swim with the big fish. Julie placed 6th in the 50 free, 10th in the 200 IM (fastest last 50 freestyle of the meet!),12th in the 100 breast, and 13th in the 100 free. All of the swims were new team records and top 16 reportable times, and the 200 IM was a new US Open time standard. Amanda Duncan blew all the coaches mind by going 56.8 in the 100 fly, placing 5th with a new US Open, top 16, and 15-16 girls team record swim. Amanda was a minute flyer at the beginning of the season folks! Casey Kott was strong, placing 6th in the 50 free with a new top 16 time, 7th in the 100 free, 12th in the 100 back, and having a great time drop in the 100 fly in the bonus consolations. Kenny Cross put together the best 100 breast of his life placing 5th with a top sixteen qualifying time, hundredths off the US Open cut. Kenny followed that up with a great 50 free and two awesome 200 breastroke races, marking a six second time drop over the course of the season in that event. Other swims of note were Mark Nowell placing 12th in the 100 breast and 15th in the 50 free, Grey Liston’s great time drop to place 15th in the 200 fly, David Greene’s sweet 100 breast in the bonus consolations, Nathan Farmer’s great 200 breast in the bonus consolations, Will Dove swimming best times in the 100, 200, 500, 1000, freestyles, 100 and 200 butterfly’s, and ending the meet with a perfect negative split 1650, Kimmy Davis swimming four best times and setting a team record in the 15-16 girls 100 breast, Caroline Ackley getting back on track with a 16th place in the 100 free, and a super 100 fly, Gene Johnston’s awesome ten second time drop in the 1000 free, and Holly Dettloff showing new found speed with best times in the 500 and 100 freestyles. Then there were the relay’s which were simply spectacular. It showed just what a great “team” effort our swimmers put out as everyone came through in the relays. All of RSA’s “A” relays qualified for Senior Nationals. The 800 free relays got RSA going with the boys relay of Casey Kott, Eric McGinnis, Will Broughton, and Matt McGinnis placing third with a new team record, while the girls relay of Stephanie Glover (lead off best time by two seconds), Kimmy Davis, Julie Smith and Katy Bland placed 6th. It got better the next night, as the girls 400 free relay of Stephanie Glover Amanda Duncan, Julie Smith and Katy Bland placed 3rd overall, crushing the state and team record in the process! The boys 400 free relay of Casey Kott (best time on the lead off leg), Eric McGinnis, Mark Nowell, and Matt McGinnis won the event in a new Sectional meet record and team record time. Our “B” boys relay of David Greene, Kenny Cross, Will Dove, and Grey Liston swam out of their minds to place 10th overall. The coaches didn’t thinks it could get better than that, but the medley relays were sweet! The girls relay of Stephanie Glover, Julie Smith, Amanda Duncan and Katy Bland placed third, once again crushing the state and team record! Then in one of the most exciting races of the meet, the relay of Casey Kott, Kenny Cross, Grey Liston, and Matt McGinnis placed 2nd, breaking the team record and missing the state record by five one hundredths of a second. The “B” relay of Mark Nowell (best time on lead off leg), Nathan Farmer, David Greene, and Eric McGinnis did a great job placing 15th. This was a huge meet, over 100 teams and over 800 swimmers, and RSA did amazing in the teams standings. The men were 2nd overall in the meet, and RSA was 3rd in the overall team score. Here are the final combined team scores: Place Team Points 1st Dynamo Swim Club 1,105 . 50 2 Mecklenburg Aquatic Club 797 . 50 3 Raleigh Swimming Association 540 4 Pilot Aquatic Club-Knoxville 495 . 50 5 Lakeside Seahawks 467 . 50 Coaches Dan, Ed, and Larry are very proud of everyone’s performance, as we clearly showed that RSA is one of the top programs in the United States! |
